I finished the following dress back in January, and am just getting around to posting it now! To add to that, I had the fabric put aside for it for like eight years...<br />
<br />
I got a bunch of navy polka dot fabric from my mom and wanted to use it for something special. I think it's just a plain woven cotton (no stretch). I decided to make a dress inspired by this one from Angelic Pretty:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cxp-_OgdZXI/VdIqJ_PF-zI/AAAAAAAAHZk/KJlT2gaN39w/s1600/ap%2Bs640x480.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cxp-_OgdZXI/VdIqJ_PF-zI/AAAAAAAAHZk/KJlT2gaN39w/s1600/ap%2Bs640x480.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">(Not my photo - I found it online a long time ago)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Here's my version:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aeoNZjzq7yc/VdIqWCOMOzI/AAAAAAAAHaU/5i4VbR1BvPo/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B2%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aeoNZjzq7yc/VdIqWCOMOzI/AAAAAAAAHaU/5i4VbR1BvPo/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B2%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't realize until after I took the photos that my scarf was ridiculously long. Oops.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GKygvkLmlD4/VdIqXI9_23I/AAAAAAAAHaw/yT5LQWkjKEo/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B4%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GKygvkLmlD4/VdIqXI9_23I/AAAAAAAAHaw/yT5LQWkjKEo/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B4%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The dress is a combination of several patterns: <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2012/03/whats-black-and-white-and-spotted-all.html#more" target="_blank">this empire waist top</a> I drafted a couple years ago, Butterick 5603 for the skirt, and some puff sleeves I pulled from a blouse pattern (I don't remember what one it was). For the collar, I used a pattern from one a Japanese sewing magazine, but again, it's been too long and I don't remember which one it was. One thing I do remember is that I didn't use the Butterick top because commercial patterns never fit my narrow shoulders correctly.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ntzVnxZ_Cwo/VdIqXel9AkI/AAAAAAAAHbA/MDd7Y31Wu84/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B5%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ntzVnxZ_Cwo/VdIqXel9AkI/AAAAAAAAHbA/MDd7Y31Wu84/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B5%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The trim on the collar is bias tape, while all the white trim is narrow twill tape. There was a lot of topstitching involved in this project!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k2d-dxM8GRg/VdIqXi0UIXI/AAAAAAAAHa4/jfp7Ef4sHG8/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B9%2Bb%2Br.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k2d-dxM8GRg/VdIqXi0UIXI/AAAAAAAAHa4/jfp7Ef4sHG8/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B9%2Bb%2Br.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The collar is removable, so I don't have to look so over the top sailor all the time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hwctz_9QTZI/VdIqVkN0YjI/AAAAAAAAHbQ/bNXGdGuC5MQ/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B15%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hwctz_9QTZI/VdIqVkN0YjI/AAAAAAAAHbQ/bNXGdGuC5MQ/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B15%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ObxBtSnwRNE/VdIqV6cjkUI/AAAAAAAAHbM/A2TI9QXNInc/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B17%2Bb%2Br.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ObxBtSnwRNE/VdIqV6cjkUI/AAAAAAAAHbM/A2TI9QXNInc/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B17%2Bb%2Br.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wHroPC3aDvI/VdIqVZqOdvI/AAAAAAAAHbY/4ro8MOtswEA/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B13%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wHroPC3aDvI/VdIqVZqOdvI/AAAAAAAAHbY/4ro8MOtswEA/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B13%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I wish I had figured the collar out a bit better. It has a hook and eye on the front, and some thread loops on the underside to keep a scarf in place. It just sits on the dress like a necklace. It would be nice to have something permanent to keep it from shifting around, but a safety pin does the job too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K8pKagtg91U/VdIqVfaG2oI/AAAAAAAAHaA/o4RIrZ7wbWs/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B12%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K8pKagtg91U/VdIqVfaG2oI/AAAAAAAAHaA/o4RIrZ7wbWs/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B12%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
All the photos above show the dress with a floofy petticoat. This is what it looks like without one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B6lKCpcsO78/VdIqV_rSbTI/AAAAAAAAHbE/OB16FqKvRao/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B19%2Bb%2Br.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B6lKCpcsO78/VdIqV_rSbTI/AAAAAAAAHbE/OB16FqKvRao/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B19%2Bb%2Br.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I used some horsehair braid to stabilize the neckline, inspired by <a href="http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/2014/10/shaping-neckline-with-horsehair-braid.html" target="_blank">this post</a> from Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing. Mine was much narrower, and I wish I had shaped it a bit more. The neckline wants to flip to the outside when I'm not wearing it because of the stiffness.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kzfP-diEtOQ/VdIqW_16gCI/AAAAAAAAHao/IdCs-jwyty4/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B23%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kzfP-diEtOQ/VdIqW_16gCI/AAAAAAAAHao/IdCs-jwyty4/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B23%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n4d2ytODe18/VdIqWjaOSGI/AAAAAAAAHak/wNgoRyIKuPk/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B22%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n4d2ytODe18/VdIqWjaOSGI/AAAAAAAAHak/wNgoRyIKuPk/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B22%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
There is an invisible zipper on the side. Below, you can see the channels I created in the sleeves for elastic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OixaX_Qzyoc/VdIqWayWq3I/AAAAAAAAHac/jCtY39StWtU/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B20%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OixaX_Qzyoc/VdIqWayWq3I/AAAAAAAAHac/jCtY39StWtU/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B20%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CRbF_IyCRgQ/VdIqWVBoelI/AAAAAAAAHbI/82do8GZAL44/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B21%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CRbF_IyCRgQ/VdIqWVBoelI/AAAAAAAAHbI/82do8GZAL44/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B21%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The hem is finished with twill tape on the underside. This, along with the two decorative rows on the outside give the hem a bit of stiffness even without a petticoat.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g2IrDrisTwg/VdIqVVYTIsI/AAAAAAAAHbU/w146muU9gZg/s1600/sailor%2Bdress%2B14%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g2IrDrisTwg/VdIqVVYTIsI/AAAAAAAAHbU/w146muU9gZg/s640/sailor%2Bdress%2B14%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Overall, I'm quite happy with how the dress came out. I think I managed to do the fabric justice.Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-25754328848512959742015-07-12T12:24:00.002-04:002015-07-12T12:24:38.257-04:00Finally a use for the tiniest fabric scrapsAfter making the <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-skirt-of-shirts.html" target="_blank">Gibbous inspired bustle skirt</a>, I wanted to make more items in the same style. To start, I put together a matching distressed cuff.<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VRqHx6TIrgE/VaKSD4UQGLI/AAAAAAAAHDc/Ttd-SviPb6g/s1600/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VRqHx6TIrgE/VaKSD4UQGLI/AAAAAAAAHDc/Ttd-SviPb6g/s640/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This was a pretty fun and quick project. I made a base rectangle a bit shorter than the distance around my wrist, then layered scraps over it until I liked how it looked. I added some ribbons, beads and buttons by hand to finish it off.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4dQMpLI1mR0/VaKSDidwyiI/AAAAAAAAHDQ/fpEkYFCBUrU/s1600/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4dQMpLI1mR0/VaKSDidwyiI/AAAAAAAAHDQ/fpEkYFCBUrU/s640/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Originally I planned to have the cuff tie on with this ribbon, but I didn't consider how difficult it would be to tie a bow with one hand. I added a piece of elastic on the underside to hold the cuff on while typing the bow. This works, but isn't the prettiest. Next time I make one of these, I plan to use a button and loop to fasten it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ucc0RNDbLlA/VaKSDyyGKVI/AAAAAAAAHDY/z6JH0GBYMQY/s1600/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ucc0RNDbLlA/VaKSDyyGKVI/AAAAAAAAHDY/z6JH0GBYMQY/s640/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see here the base is another piece of the denim I used for the skirt and an outside layer made out of a leftover scrap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9SrovBkdIZ0/VaKSEVnmpGI/AAAAAAAAHDU/0v0bg9cDvqw/s1600/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9SrovBkdIZ0/VaKSEVnmpGI/AAAAAAAAHDU/0v0bg9cDvqw/s640/deconstructed%2Bcuff%2B4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I bought these buttons for a different project but they ended up being the wrong color. I still think they're nice, so I'm glad I found another use for them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope to make some more of these cuffs for sale, but I've really been slacking lately with sewing. I need to work on that!</div>
Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-85594327957927809142015-06-17T16:31:00.001-04:002015-06-17T16:31:57.449-04:00"Oh, I thought those flowers were made of your hair..."I bought a bunch of stretch lace last year but after washing a pair of panties made of it I found out it gets ruined very easily. I was pretty disappointed with that because if I make things out of it for anyone but myself, I can't guarantee they will wash them carefully enough.<br />
<br />
Fast forward to now. I saw <a href="http://seekatesew.com/ruffled-flower-crown-tutorial/" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> a few weeks ago, and decided to give it a shot. In my excitement for finding a project that wouldn't need to be washed much (if at all) I cut several dozen strips of lace. This part went pretty quickly since I didn't have to worry about the cuts being perfect.<br />
<br />
My machine didn't gather the lace up on it's own as the tutorial suggests no matter the settings, so I had to gather every strip of lace after sewing it. I then sewed them into the flower shapes instead of gluing, but glued them to the 1/4" fold over elastic (which is 1/2" unfolded as shown below) with some fleece circles like the tutorial suggests.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H7l4ZVOKlMs/VX9DUXahYfI/AAAAAAAAGzA/CTiHmzPmoF4/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B3%2Be%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H7l4ZVOKlMs/VX9DUXahYfI/AAAAAAAAGzA/CTiHmzPmoF4/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B3%2Be%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I went to a party wearing this and a couple friends thought I had somehow braided my hair up into the headband until they saw it close up. The color match with my hair is ridiculously close.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qvcj_ta1btA/VX9DT-9P6-I/AAAAAAAAGy4/Vp6y99xqy74/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B2%2Be%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qvcj_ta1btA/VX9DT-9P6-I/AAAAAAAAGy4/Vp6y99xqy74/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B2%2Be%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hFLytUuSK8E/VX9DUgL7I9I/AAAAAAAAGzI/54KKjkL0Xcs/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B6%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hFLytUuSK8E/VX9DUgL7I9I/AAAAAAAAGzI/54KKjkL0Xcs/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B6%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used five flowers for the headband. The elastic is just tied in the back so it's easily adjustable. You'll also notice my flowers are two colors. I layered a 1.5" strip of cream lace over a 3" strip of the pink when sewing the gathering stitches to get this two-color effect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WGLlJ02ymZU/VX9DVkZsZWI/AAAAAAAAGzQ/FV9LGjCf448/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B7%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WGLlJ02ymZU/VX9DVkZsZWI/AAAAAAAAGzQ/FV9LGjCf448/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B7%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I then made a second one in black because I thought this would be a great accessory for girly goth outfits:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G4Irkwr7RaI/VX9DTSbBGXI/AAAAAAAAGzM/WYQ0zz3cW1g/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B10%2Be%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G4Irkwr7RaI/VX9DTSbBGXI/AAAAAAAAGzM/WYQ0zz3cW1g/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B10%2Be%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OIj4A7gfNbw/VX9DTn7p2nI/AAAAAAAAGys/lE6DubocJx8/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B11%2Be%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OIj4A7gfNbw/VX9DTn7p2nI/AAAAAAAAGys/lE6DubocJx8/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bcrown%2B11%2Be%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
Like I said about cutting the lace, I made a whole lot of these flowers. After doing the headbands, I turned some into clips as well:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1WRbxR-NV9I/VX9DSxuk8iI/AAAAAAAAGyo/aKk679rfyFU/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bclip%2B3%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1WRbxR-NV9I/VX9DSxuk8iI/AAAAAAAAGyo/aKk679rfyFU/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bclip%2B3%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XS94XdPUXR0/VX9DSwcKwYI/AAAAAAAAGyU/D_RZA_5GJuo/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bclip%2B4%2Be%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XS94XdPUXR0/VX9DSwcKwYI/AAAAAAAAGyU/D_RZA_5GJuo/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bclip%2B4%2Be%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
These large clips are a bit sharp so I was hesitant to use them, but they stay really well even in my thin hair.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W4PjchnlmZM/VX9DS1Wxl7I/AAAAAAAAGyc/Ixu1c3RWSoU/s1600/lace%2Bflower%2Bclip%2B5%2Be%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W4PjchnlmZM/VX9DS1Wxl7I/AAAAAAAAGyc/Ixu1c3RWSoU/s640/lace%2Bflower%2Bclip%2B5%2Be%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's all the colors I ended up with. These flowers turned out to be a pretty good way to use up a bunch of lace I couldn't use for much else.<br />

<br />
The actual answer is this skirt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PqCaycj-BOw/VXRIt7wrXvI/AAAAAAAAGrw/b85MGCxQz0Y/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B2%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PqCaycj-BOw/VXRIt7wrXvI/AAAAAAAAGrw/b85MGCxQz0Y/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B2%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V_yL7BfkthY/VXRI6JxJGXI/AAAAAAAAGsM/PELxXdFm8-M/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V_yL7BfkthY/VXRI6JxJGXI/AAAAAAAAGsM/PELxXdFm8-M/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4jxS00KoKdg/VXRJAok-ToI/AAAAAAAAGsY/HoNn1iynnGU/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B5%2Be.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4jxS00KoKdg/VXRJAok-ToI/AAAAAAAAGsY/HoNn1iynnGU/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B5%2Be.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I don't have much to say about it because it's a fairly standard skirt. The fabric is something from my stash - a super swishy (read: pretty loud) synthetic that moves around very well. I saw this trim at the fabric store pretty often but never knew what I would use it for, until I remembered this polka dot fabric. It's a strip of pleated satin ribbon and organza.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q0lLAFiY6so/VXRIuA7mrPI/AAAAAAAAGr4/VxpFT_84Bps/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B7%2Be%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q0lLAFiY6so/VXRIuA7mrPI/AAAAAAAAGr4/VxpFT_84Bps/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B7%2Be%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I usually go for elastic waist but wanted this skirt to sit a bit smoother. There's a side zipper and a hook and bar hidden behind a button. I thought the fabric was a little thin for an actual button hole.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dKDOOCBYP4o/VXRItzkYLfI/AAAAAAAAGro/1cLpRaEjt4Q/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B6%2Be%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dKDOOCBYP4o/VXRItzkYLfI/AAAAAAAAGro/1cLpRaEjt4Q/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B6%2Be%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern is a regular circle skirt cut in two pieces (front and back).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FAwStXKOPXE/VXRIt4W0LXI/AAAAAAAAGr0/5FBoKgj4v3s/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B5%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FAwStXKOPXE/VXRIt4W0LXI/AAAAAAAAGr0/5FBoKgj4v3s/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2B5%2Bb%2Bf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
As is usual with a circle skirt, it's great for twirling!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BQm6Ta4zJ4Y/VXRI6JAt3KI/AAAAAAAAGsI/S2KsS4ETMR0/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B1%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BQm6Ta4zJ4Y/VXRI6JAt3KI/AAAAAAAAGsI/S2KsS4ETMR0/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B1%2Bf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G0o2iFOl7FM/VXRI6Jz687I/AAAAAAAAGsQ/ph6FtiEqXpQ/s1600/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B3%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G0o2iFOl7FM/VXRI6Jz687I/AAAAAAAAGsQ/ph6FtiEqXpQ/s640/bw%2Bdot%2Bskirt%2Bpetti%2B3%2Bf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>

I did incorporate it into a skirt once, so you can see that <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/07/it-is-what-futuristic-lego-girl-would.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I made pretty much everything in these photos, but while searching for links to other posts, I couldn't find one for the skirt and fluffies. This was going to be about the shrugs and utility belt, but hey, let's toss the skirt and fluffies in too! For the one-shoulder top, check out <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/10/theres-always-ghosts-touching-you.html" target="_blank">this post</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2tiNWpzhOmg/VXMP9v10l_I/AAAAAAAAGqc/Glq_5uVxV58/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B2%2Bbf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2tiNWpzhOmg/VXMP9v10l_I/AAAAAAAAGqc/Glq_5uVxV58/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B2%2Bbf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AaFXohvdG5A/VXMP-g1MXqI/AAAAAAAAGp4/SU4GngbdKAc/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B2%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AaFXohvdG5A/VXMP-g1MXqI/AAAAAAAAGp4/SU4GngbdKAc/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B2%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Let's start with the shrugs. These were somewhat inspired by the top from <a href="https://youtu.be/BKQ6nINAeq8?t=130" target="_blank">this video for Go Kindergarten by The Lonely Island</a>. I used Butterick B6151, which calls this pattern a vest for some reason. Since there's little leeway fitting vinyl once it's cut or sewn, I made a quick mock-up in a regular fabric. I wanted a more geometric look so I changed the shape of the front, and also closed the shoulder dart. I liked the look of the bottom of the back sticking out, so I left that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6SpEmzdoCKQ/VXMP96TOIAI/AAAAAAAAGp0/4p9hWRcJJfQ/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B3%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6SpEmzdoCKQ/VXMP96TOIAI/AAAAAAAAGp0/4p9hWRcJJfQ/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B3%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see, the shrug looks pretty identical on the outside and inside. All the edges are covered in bias binding to keep the stiff vinyl from cutting in while worn.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aqV9ecP2EKY/VXMP-Hm4uFI/AAAAAAAAGpw/UslPa7NmnOE/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B4%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aqV9ecP2EKY/VXMP-Hm4uFI/AAAAAAAAGpw/UslPa7NmnOE/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B4%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The only seams were on the shoulder, so I covered them with bias binding on both sides to strengthen and hide the connection. This photo also shows just how much this vinyl glows in the light. It's really pretty!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rtbikYJnMZE/VXMP-aFoMlI/AAAAAAAAGqQ/3jJXmQU7hPs/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B5%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rtbikYJnMZE/VXMP-aFoMlI/AAAAAAAAGqQ/3jJXmQU7hPs/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B5%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You may have noticed by now I made one in green and another in orange.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rrJWvA3QnLQ/VXMP-waXdVI/AAAAAAAAGqM/BCnkWcs2U6M/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B3%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rrJWvA3QnLQ/VXMP-waXdVI/AAAAAAAAGqM/BCnkWcs2U6M/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B3%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xv9e3V9baEs/VXMP-YXGFxI/AAAAAAAAGqA/v6zsMpFzljY/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B1%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xv9e3V9baEs/VXMP-YXGFxI/AAAAAAAAGqA/v6zsMpFzljY/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B1%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NmSNDlHb8PU/VXMP_b8ji0I/AAAAAAAAGqU/nqc4NVEoqtQ/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B4%2Bbf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NmSNDlHb8PU/VXMP_b8ji0I/AAAAAAAAGqU/nqc4NVEoqtQ/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Borange%2B4%2Bbf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
These photos also show the skirt and fluffies pretty well. The skirt has pockets and a spandex waistband. It's all made from a long minky fur, which is super soft. Let's take a look at the utility belt next:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EbjCNmmn8Aw/VXMP883oduI/AAAAAAAAGqk/9PWocDvf9NI/s1600/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B1%2Bbf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EbjCNmmn8Aw/VXMP883oduI/AAAAAAAAGqk/9PWocDvf9NI/s640/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B1%2Bbf.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H-O4tlxiHaE/VXMP89ZP6kI/AAAAAAAAGqg/N_ZKAuQJdBs/s1600/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B2%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H-O4tlxiHaE/VXMP89ZP6kI/AAAAAAAAGqg/N_ZKAuQJdBs/s640/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B2%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I based this on <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/01/im-actually-superhero.html" target="_blank">my last utility belt</a>, but changed up the pockets a bit. The one with an elastic top is large enough to hold a water bottle. The belt is great when I'm just walking around, but honestly it's not that great for dancing. When there's anything heavy in the pockets it bounces enough to hurt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3QvENcRF46E/VXMP8wgrZdI/AAAAAAAAGpY/5qVnQWvQ8hg/s1600/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B3%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3QvENcRF46E/VXMP8wgrZdI/AAAAAAAAGpY/5qVnQWvQ8hg/s640/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B3%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used denim as the lining for strength. The outer fabric is a remnant I bought before I even knew how to sew because I loved the color. I put off making anything out of it because I don't have enough of it to allow for mistakes. The belt and pockets close with velcro.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SGVmWsLPhiA/VXMP9ZefprI/AAAAAAAAGqY/Gb-3tzl1Pto/s1600/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B4%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SGVmWsLPhiA/VXMP9ZefprI/AAAAAAAAGqY/Gb-3tzl1Pto/s640/utility%2Bbelt%2Bgreen%2B4%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To close, here's a shot of the back of (almost) everything:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a6LmpZrsmsA/VXMP9kVKMKI/AAAAAAAAGpk/80ZpJNv0qaI/s1600/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B1%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a6LmpZrsmsA/VXMP9kVKMKI/AAAAAAAAGpk/80ZpJNv0qaI/s640/vinyl%2Bshrug%2Bgreen%2B1%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-62335243852026888942015-05-21T20:47:00.001-04:002015-05-21T21:04:06.029-04:00A skirt of shirtsI probably found out about <a href="http://www.gibbousfashions.com/" target="_blank">Gibbous clothing</a> more than six years ago, and kept telling myself I would try to make something in the style since then. I even had a box set aside to collect color coordinated fabric scraps and clothes I didn't need anymore so I had materials when I finally got around to it.<br />
<br />
During this past winter, I saw a girl dancing in a similarly styled skirt at a party and I kept thinking about it. Dammit I was going to make one!<br />
<br />
I pulled out that box of fabric, then spent a night doing a lot of pinning, sewing, and twirling, and here's the resulting skirt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M9DLg9pee9M/VV5uyo5WB5I/AAAAAAAAGhk/x6jXLT3kPsU/s1600/tribal%2Bbustle%2B7%2Bbf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M9DLg9pee9M/VV5uyo5WB5I/AAAAAAAAGhk/x6jXLT3kPsU/s640/tribal%2Bbustle%2B7%2Bbf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Klvn6zzd974/VV5ux6WMHDI/AAAAAAAAGg8/4PEqUvPAC5Q/s1600/tribal%2Bbustle%2B4%2Bbf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Klvn6zzd974/VV5ux6WMHDI/AAAAAAAAGg8/4PEqUvPAC5Q/s640/tribal%2Bbustle%2B4%2Bbf.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>To make it, I roughly cut out a yoke from one of my scraps and lined it with some denim since it needed to support the whole skirt. While sewing the yoke I sandwiched some old shirt sleeves in between the lining and outer fabric to use as ties. Next I started pinning pieces to the yoke on my dress form, trying to balance the left and right side without making them symmetrical. After pinning a couple pieces I would sew them down, then add more until I liked how it looked. Once all the loose pieces were on, I finished with the strip of lace and the shredded fabric over the yoke.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lzuZLWJtmyE/VV5uxAa7-UI/AAAAAAAAGgs/z1vivVWGFoI/s1600/tribal%2Bbustle%2B10%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lzuZLWJtmyE/VV5uxAa7-UI/AAAAAAAAGgs/z1vivVWGFoI/s640/tribal%2Bbustle%2B10%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I sewed lines randomly over the yoke section to keep everything together. The outermost layer is a knit fabric, so when I slashed it between the stitching it rolled at the edges and created this effect:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FaKqdLxam0A/VV5uyxWcMfI/AAAAAAAAGhU/rNnBImoPfYU/s1600/tribal%2Bbustle%2B9%2Bbr.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FaKqdLxam0A/VV5uyxWcMfI/AAAAAAAAGhU/rNnBImoPfYU/s640/tribal%2Bbustle%2B9%2Bbr.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see some burgundy fabric with a sort of paisley design on the ends in the photo below. I really liked the print on this fabric (it also has sequins embroidered onto it) but I hated the fit of the skirt it came from. Also, the lace strip is from a comforter I had as a kid. I'm glad I could finally incorporate both of these into something I'll wear.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fd2LaesHBc8/VV5uywLvkfI/AAAAAAAAGhc/899RuWYelv0/s1600/tribal%2Bbustle%2B8%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fd2LaesHBc8/VV5uywLvkfI/AAAAAAAAGhc/899RuWYelv0/s640/tribal%2Bbustle%2B8%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A lot of my fabrics were shirts, so I have some neat details like this pocket, and the buttons on the front (though they don't really close anymore). Many of the shirts were linen, so the skirt wrinkles like mad, but I think I'm ok with that in this case.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WMS8UoQM6Bo/VV5uyG41LDI/AAAAAAAAGhE/PI1ZoivSBsg/s1600/tribal%2Bbustle%2B6%2Bbr.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WMS8UoQM6Bo/VV5uyG41LDI/AAAAAAAAGhE/PI1ZoivSBsg/s640/tribal%2Bbustle%2B6%2Bbr.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

This skirt turned out pretty fun to sew even though I had put it off for so long. It was nice to not care much about everything being perfectly symmetrical, hemmed neatly, etc. I'd like to make more of them, but I might have to recruit some people to donate clothes and wear the resulting skirts...Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-36415741786984556832015-05-14T19:57:00.000-04:002015-05-14T19:57:44.048-04:00This skirt makes me feel like a ballerinaI've been wanting to try doing a fishing line hem on something for a while, and since I've gotten comfortable using a serger over the past year I thought I'd give it a shot. I looked at a bunch of tutorials but none of them seemed to agree how heavy the fishing line should be, so I didn't really follow any one set of instructions. You can also do this kind of hem on a regular machine with a zig-zag stitch, which I might try next time just to see how it works.<br />
<br />
This skirt was pretty easy to put together. I had some leftover organza from other projects, which I pieced into two full circles (one about 3 inches shorter than the other) with french seams. I then hemmed each circle with the rolled hem settings on my serger, carefully feeding the fishing line into the seam. It was a bit of a pain in the butt because occasionally the line would slip out of the hem and I'd have to go back a couple inches to cover it up. These spots aren't noticeable in the finished skirt, though after wearing it to a party I've noticed a couple places where the rolled hem is pulling away. the organza frays pretty easily, and I'm not sure how to keep this from happening. I've noticed it on my store bought clothes as well. Once both layers were hemmed, I added a simple elastic waist made of matching cotton.<br />
<br />

<br />
For only two layers of organza, this hem is pretty fluffy and bouncy. I used a 40lb fishing line, which is on the heavy side of all the different suggested weights I ran into while looking for tutorials.<br />

This means I'll have a lot of new stuff to talk about in the next couple weeks!<br />
<br />
I also haven't been sewing much because I've been sick, so I wanted to do a small satisfying project to get back into the grove. My watch band was completely destroyed and I've been meaning to make a few replacements. (Okay, the whole watch is pretty destroyed, but I really like it! I tried to get a new one, but there's always something that bothers me about the ones I've tried).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wdslrCfLrgg/VVOMSdGY2BI/AAAAAAAAGdg/iu4ADYXF0F8/s1600/watch%2Bband%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wdslrCfLrgg/VVOMSdGY2BI/AAAAAAAAGdg/iu4ADYXF0F8/s640/watch%2Bband%2B2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I re-used the D-rings from my old bands, but didn't have enough, so I tried one with velcro. It's not as strong as the D-rings but should be fine unless I'm being really active.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--sp8b8SkUTQ/VVOMSfXRdmI/AAAAAAAAGdU/kzozDoep-yY/s1600/watch%2Bband%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--sp8b8SkUTQ/VVOMSfXRdmI/AAAAAAAAGdU/kzozDoep-yY/s640/watch%2Bband%2B3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There's no interfacing in these, but I folded the fabric so it was 4 layers for a little extra stiffness. I didn't make a tube and flip it right side out. Instead, I folded the rectangle and top-stitched all the way around.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f5-Pcb5FNQg/VVOMSTuQKdI/AAAAAAAAGdQ/U0EQ3lUFePE/s1600/watch%2Bband%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f5-Pcb5FNQg/VVOMSTuQKdI/AAAAAAAAGdQ/U0EQ3lUFePE/s640/watch%2Bband%2B1.JPG" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's what one looks like on my tiny wrist. If you remember, this fabric matches <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/08/i-dont-think-these-kitties-are.html" target="_blank">the kitty dress</a> I posted about last year.Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-43724845570549721832015-04-14T17:44:00.000-04:002015-04-14T17:51:39.470-04:00Samurai! (or how I ended up cosplaying Hinamori Momo)Back in March, I was contacted by the Worcester Art Museum about finding a cosplayer for the opening of the <a href="http://www.worcesterart.org/exhibitions/samurai/#opening" target="_blank">Samurai!</a> exhibit, which combines real samurai goodies such as armor with current pop culture. Of course this seemed interesting since I used to intern at Higgins Armory (an excuse to look at armor again and make costumes? yes please!).<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I spent a while trying to think of a costume that would be fairly recognizable, family friendly, and doable in a couple weeks. It suddenly hit me, Bleach! I used to both read the manga and watch the show so I'm relatively familiar with the early parts of the story (there's a crazy amount of chapters/episodes now). I asked my boyfriend to participate as well, and we agreed on dressing as <a href="http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Momo_Hinamori/Image_Gallery" target="_blank">Momo Hinamori</a> and <a href="http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Renji_Abarai/Image_Gallery" target="_blank">Renji Abarai</a>. These characters are both lieutenant shinigami, who wear a black and white uniform based on traditional Japanese clothing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't have finished photos yet, but here's a bit of a sneak peak and some construction notes:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C5h03dmZiPU/VS2B1oQfDJI/AAAAAAAAGSw/JA289yBE96o/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C5h03dmZiPU/VS2B1oQfDJI/AAAAAAAAGSw/JA289yBE96o/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B2.JPG" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
<a name='more'></a>I started out by listing everything I would need for each character. (I like to do this whenever making a costume, or even an outfit for myself.) A lot of the pieces are the same for both Momo and Renji, so this list was quite useful to keep track of them. After that, gather materials! There's a crazy amount of fabric here - something like 14 yards of black fabric alone.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As far as the major pieces go, I needed:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2 black kimono</div>
<div>
2 white kimono</div>
<div>
2 black hakama with white himo </div>
<div>
2 pairs of tabi socks</div>
<div>
2 pairs of straw sandals</div>
<div>
and wigs of course!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A lot of Bleach cosplayers merely add white trim to a black kimono for the top, but this kind of inaccuracy bothers me. I made white under-kimono instead. These are still cheated a bit since they only go down to the waist instead of the knee like they would in reality. I used <a href="http://www-personal.umich.edu/~weyrbrat/Japan/yukata/" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> for both the white and the black kimono, except since these are costumes, I machine sewed everything.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I then made hakama using Folkwear pattern 151, which is really just a diagram of measurements but goes together easily. As you can see, I still needed to hem them to the proper length (to the ankle) in the photo above.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the tabi (socks) I used the pattern I use for bodysuits and tights, but traced around my toes to get the necessary separation. Again, there's some costume related cheating happening here - I used a stretchy knit fabric instead of the historically accurate woven cut on the bias.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now, on to the sandals, which are based on traditional Japanese waraji and took the longest to make. <a href="https://heythisismyjob.wordpress.com/2013/08/30/how-to-weave-japanese-waraji-sandals-for-bleach-cosplay/" target="_blank">Here's the tutorial I used.</a> The most valuable lesson I learned during the weaving process was that jute makes a crazy mess. Jute everywhere!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4c19V0HGhFg/VS2B2a2k6jI/AAAAAAAAGTA/BCjwUQ47hhs/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4c19V0HGhFg/VS2B2a2k6jI/AAAAAAAAGTA/BCjwUQ47hhs/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B4.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JToI3xPxKF0/VS2B2vfSOyI/AAAAAAAAGTE/XdVww9nHrYc/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JToI3xPxKF0/VS2B2vfSOyI/AAAAAAAAGTE/XdVww9nHrYc/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B5.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Last but not least, the <span style="text-align: center;">wigs. You'll have to wait for pictures of Renji's but here's Momo's bun:</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bBlt7cNpeLg/VS2B1jM4kEI/AAAAAAAAGS0/1Ilyrr9tlXQ/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bBlt7cNpeLg/VS2B1jM4kEI/AAAAAAAAGS0/1Ilyrr9tlXQ/s1600/bleach%2Bcosplay%2B3.JPG" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am super happy with how this came out. The bun is some scrap fabric stuffed with fiber fill, covered with the correct outer fabric and sewn to the wig. I then tied some very narrow bias tape around it as the ribbon.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That's all for now, but keep an eye out for another post once I have photos of the finished costumes! And if you're in New England, I recommend checking out the <a href="http://www.worcesterart.org/exhibitions/samurai/#opening" target="_blank">Samurai!</a> exhibit at the Worcester Art Museum. </div>

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
This dress seems crazy simple to make, and (full disclosure) I haven't made it but drew up this guide for how I would go about sewing something similar. It's also some insight into how I figure out how to make something in my head/on paper before actually doing it.<br />

It's just something I say sometimes...<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyways, I finally got around to making those space suits!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zk4NZAic-Io/VOV_E7pAq9I/AAAAAAAAF2c/0qiREyCiCX8/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zk4NZAic-Io/VOV_E7pAq9I/AAAAAAAAF2c/0qiREyCiCX8/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B5.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9TPP5WnB9Nk/VOV_IKRhcrI/AAAAAAAAF30/VAW_z6vhaZY/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9TPP5WnB9Nk/VOV_IKRhcrI/AAAAAAAAF30/VAW_z6vhaZY/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B4.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
The fabric for the first suit is an interesting space/floral print nylon/spandex. It is significantly more stretchy than the fabric I used for my <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/12/im-longer-than-i-thought.html" target="_blank">test suit</a> so I didn't add extra length to the torso like I needed to do on that one. In case you haven't had a chance to read the original post, the pattern for these suits is something I traced off an existing store-bought suit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sometime between making the test suit and these, I bought an invisible zipper foot. Strange that I didn't already have one, I know, but I never had too much trouble using a regular zipper foot for invisible zippers so I just didn't bother. It did make putting zippers into this super stretchy fabric a bit easier though. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CnPNC0_7fsk/VOV_Ff_QaGI/AAAAAAAAF2o/SP26x6U0c1s/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CnPNC0_7fsk/VOV_Ff_QaGI/AAAAAAAAF2o/SP26x6U0c1s/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B6.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
Notice anything odd?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7eNdLexNR-0/VOV_F6wEs7I/AAAAAAAAF3A/R1KE8bivHyI/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7eNdLexNR-0/VOV_F6wEs7I/AAAAAAAAF3A/R1KE8bivHyI/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B7.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The torso is bunchy! It's too long! I was surprised considering the test suit was too short. This resulted in the zipper being a bit wavy when I sit, and the crotch being much too low. It bothers me enough that I might go back and raise the crotch, but it's such a pain to seam rip this fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SsjDuJqrPL0/VOV_EKr-WiI/AAAAAAAAF2I/GwKTfhyYzEM/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SsjDuJqrPL0/VOV_EKr-WiI/AAAAAAAAF2I/GwKTfhyYzEM/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B3.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There is an invisible zipper down the front and a second at the crotch. The foot has a dart at the heel for shaping.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4crNIJ7w_2w/VOV_E11lgCI/AAAAAAAAF4k/yhsGe7WgU8g/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4crNIJ7w_2w/VOV_E11lgCI/AAAAAAAAF4k/yhsGe7WgU8g/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B4.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The collar is a little too loose, but at least the top stitching came out great.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8OzaPF3MQgw/VOV_GZvn-aI/AAAAAAAAF28/nohNvMqddkU/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8OzaPF3MQgw/VOV_GZvn-aI/AAAAAAAAF28/nohNvMqddkU/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B9.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The entire suit is serged together, except the zippers and collar.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8S9wS96oclo/VOV_DRhZExI/AAAAAAAAF10/cRACC3fSx64/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8S9wS96oclo/VOV_DRhZExI/AAAAAAAAF10/cRACC3fSx64/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B10.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a closeup of the back of the crotch. There is no center back seam, so it looks a bit like the zipper is inserted into a dart. You can also see the crotch gusset here. If I do try to raise the crotch, I plan to take out the crotch zipper and gusset, cut the legs higher into the body, and put them back in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CiGpE5Gol_Q/VOV_DlMcRkI/AAAAAAAAF14/SKb6b0ArjP0/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CiGpE5Gol_Q/VOV_DlMcRkI/AAAAAAAAF14/SKb6b0ArjP0/s1600/plant%2Bspace%2Bsuit%2B11.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
The second suit is also a nylon/spandex fabric, but thinner and even stretchier than the one above. I made the torso shorter by about two inches, but the crotch is still a bit low. It's not nearly as bad as the other one, though you can also see some looseness in the back here.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GA4pnQ32wNI/VOV_JMg41tI/AAAAAAAAF4Y/fqspRxuaGJs/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GA4pnQ32wNI/VOV_JMg41tI/AAAAAAAAF4Y/fqspRxuaGJs/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B7.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a> </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AP18N0V3nRg/VOV_JSe9e8I/AAAAAAAAF4M/bRQlmZjl7BA/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AP18N0V3nRg/VOV_JSe9e8I/AAAAAAAAF4M/bRQlmZjl7BA/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B8.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I payed a lot of attention to how the fabric prints on these suits line up with my body parts to avoid some awkwardness, but completely blanked on matching up the side seams. It's really obvious on this suit, more so than the floral one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gaMLR-qHB5U/VOV_H0iZtPI/AAAAAAAAF3o/RKI2bE9BdJw/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gaMLR-qHB5U/VOV_H0iZtPI/AAAAAAAAF3o/RKI2bE9BdJw/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B3.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s1l7tHMQ8LA/VOV_J58scZI/AAAAAAAAF4Q/kXDvCq6FRwQ/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s1l7tHMQ8LA/VOV_J58scZI/AAAAAAAAF4Q/kXDvCq6FRwQ/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B9.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the best zipper I have ever put into anything. I used a strip of the fabric to bind the collar on this suit instead of the longer collars on the others. It looks much neater.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LLGZDLDJ82s/VOV_GjxDBrI/AAAAAAAAF3I/T1gnzLvjbTE/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LLGZDLDJ82s/VOV_GjxDBrI/AAAAAAAAF3I/T1gnzLvjbTE/s1600/space%2Bsuit%2B10.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm quite happy with how well matched the seams on this crotch gusset came out.<br />
<br />

For those wondering what the heck one does with suits like this, I'm planning to wear them to some ridiculous parties. I'll have to keep a count of how many "your _____ is out of this world" comments I get. </div>

<br />
A few months ago, <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/12/im-longer-than-i-thought.html" target="_blank">I made a wearable mock-up of a full body suit/ catsuit.</a> It worked out fairly well so I ordered fabric for the final version. With that, I got a yard of this awesome galaxy print poly/spandex to play with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dV5Lsah2BPw/VOV_CSipZHI/AAAAAAAAF1U/oGNi9L_6NAU/s1600/galaxy%2Bset%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dV5Lsah2BPw/VOV_CSipZHI/AAAAAAAAF1U/oGNi9L_6NAU/s1600/galaxy%2Bset%2B2.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzQPyHSZc0U/VOV_CTQ6tqI/AAAAAAAAF1Q/d-XCqYJ_LHU/s1600/galaxy%2Bset%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzQPyHSZc0U/VOV_CTQ6tqI/AAAAAAAAF1Q/d-XCqYJ_LHU/s1600/galaxy%2Bset%2B1.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted to make some tights using the new fabric and the bodysuit pattern, since the legs on it fit very well. (Can you tell where this is going yet?) The fabric is a lot stretchier than the previous one, so I foolishly took out a bit of length while cutting out the tights. Bad idea. The legs ended up much too short, and I had to chop the feet off to make them at all wearable. At least they still work as leggings!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DxsHcIaZpbg/VOV_B3_gnhI/AAAAAAAAF1E/7tHkb-B0Q-M/s1600/galaxy%2Bleggings%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DxsHcIaZpbg/VOV_B3_gnhI/AAAAAAAAF1E/7tHkb-B0Q-M/s1600/galaxy%2Bleggings%2B1.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I chopped the feet off the tights, they pulled up much higher on my legs. I added bands at the bottom to lengthen them a bit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e0pMHCP6_Hc/VOV_COg5pSI/AAAAAAAAF1M/dVHEI6FNbp0/s1600/galaxy%2Bleggings%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e0pMHCP6_Hc/VOV_COg5pSI/AAAAAAAAF1M/dVHEI6FNbp0/s1600/galaxy%2Bleggings%2B2.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
With the remainder of the fabric, I decided to make a quick crop top. It's the same pattern as the one I used for these <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/06/tops-that-are-both-really-hard-and.html" target="_blank">fishnet</a> and <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/11/how-many-tries-does-it-take-to-make.html" target="_blank">minky</a> tops.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0iFHjWLW5as/VOV_BEndraI/AAAAAAAAF04/KaCyWlfTcp0/s1600/galaxy%2Bcrop%2Btop%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0iFHjWLW5as/VOV_BEndraI/AAAAAAAAF04/KaCyWlfTcp0/s1600/galaxy%2Bcrop%2Btop%2B1.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eHl-7DAy2Xk/VOV_Bew8tSI/AAAAAAAAF08/689wvrnD9kY/s1600/galaxy%2Bcrop%2Btop%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eHl-7DAy2Xk/VOV_Bew8tSI/AAAAAAAAF08/689wvrnD9kY/s1600/galaxy%2Bcrop%2Btop%2B2.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TtW1F0L_DcM/VOV_BWlomHI/AAAAAAAAF1A/qkEaJ9LpLIg/s1600/galaxy%2Bcrop%2Btop%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TtW1F0L_DcM/VOV_BWlomHI/AAAAAAAAF1A/qkEaJ9LpLIg/s1600/galaxy%2Bcrop%2Btop%2B3.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The whole thing is simply serged. I love how quick this pattern is to put together, and how comfy the resulting top is.<br />
<br />
I was still left with some scraps of fabric and the feet I cut off the tights. Just for fun, I decided to make them into socks. I added a band to the top of each foot piece to make them long enough to stay up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e0QYttO3_UA/VOV_KJBIkII/AAAAAAAAF4I/4vp2eVep94g/s1600/galaxy%2Bsocks%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e0QYttO3_UA/VOV_KJBIkII/AAAAAAAAF4I/4vp2eVep94g/s1600/galaxy%2Bsocks%2B1.JPG" height="427" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also recently threw together some slippers vaguely using <a href="http://www.prettyprudent.com/2010/10/baby-kid/how-to-make-fabric-slippers-with-free-pattern-2/" target="_blank">this tutorial</a>. Well, I wanted to completely use it, but after trying twice to get the slippers to fit with an outer non-stretch layer, I gave up and only used the lining. The sole has a piece of wet-look spandex for traction. I could have probably found something better in my stash, but I have many small pieces of it around that need a use. The top edge of the slippers is bound with some fold over elastic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vVSHGKF9WaM/VOV_C1FmDdI/AAAAAAAAF1c/dlREQvWXpMc/s1600/galaxy%2Bsocks%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vVSHGKF9WaM/VOV_C1FmDdI/AAAAAAAAF1c/dlREQvWXpMc/s1600/galaxy%2Bsocks%2B2.JPG" height="427" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When I first put these slippers on in front of my boyfriend, he quickly pointed out they are made of the same fabric as his mop (same color too). At least I didn't make pants out of it!Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-6115320401754495302015-01-25T18:13:00.000-05:002015-01-25T18:13:04.179-05:00The Care Bears taught me how to touch my toesI used to love watching the Care Bears when I was a kid, and I'm not a fan of their new slimmed down reincarnations. When I saw this curtain panel with the chubby bears at a thrift store, I knew I had to make a skirt out of it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZC-abuMjrF8/VMQ1_bAoQjI/AAAAAAAAFZk/uJyGXNl66Ck/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZC-abuMjrF8/VMQ1_bAoQjI/AAAAAAAAFZk/uJyGXNl66Ck/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B1.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NBP_WkDwUzc/VMQ1_h64VzI/AAAAAAAAFZs/Kp6ACh-Ckxw/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NBP_WkDwUzc/VMQ1_h64VzI/AAAAAAAAFZs/Kp6ACh-Ckxw/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B2.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I started by undoing all the seams on the curtain. Some of the edges were faded slightly, so I trimmed these off. I was left with a rectangle just under 3X my waist measurement, which is great for a gathered (dirndl style) skirt. I cut a strip off the top to use as a waistband, but instead of trimming the faded edge on the bottom, I chose to cover it with ribbon. This way I didn't lose any more length. Somewhat anxiety causing thing with the ribbon - I didn't really consider the pieces I had might not be long enough before sewing them on, and found out they were nearly the perfect length. I had about 3 inches left at the end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-87CEvIKx2Lo/VMQ1_9myQeI/AAAAAAAAFZw/ZPhVKQEo6PM/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-87CEvIKx2Lo/VMQ1_9myQeI/AAAAAAAAFZw/ZPhVKQEo6PM/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B3.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
With the trimmed fabric scraps, I made a large bow. Both this and the skirt hem have some ruffled eyelet trim (because it's cute, obviously).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pattDrTigKA/VMQ2BblVnII/AAAAAAAAFac/ugvWi6Javpk/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pattDrTigKA/VMQ2BblVnII/AAAAAAAAFac/ugvWi6Javpk/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B4.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The curtain was a bit sheer, so I lined the whole skirt. I considered adding pockets, but since I only needed one seam on the curtain panel to make it a skirt, I decided not to.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yDBv_1QB0pM/VMQ2AcwzHrI/AAAAAAAAFaA/R68bJnZ_MiU/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yDBv_1QB0pM/VMQ2AcwzHrI/AAAAAAAAFaA/R68bJnZ_MiU/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B5.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The lining has french seams so it's pretty on the inside and if the top layer flies up in the wind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ei1l4Md2yKQ/VMQ2Avv3hII/AAAAAAAAFaI/KcyN6EUNs4s/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ei1l4Md2yKQ/VMQ2Avv3hII/AAAAAAAAFaI/KcyN6EUNs4s/s1600/care%2Bbear%2Bskirt%2B6.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I had such limited fabric, I also used the lining for the back of the bows - the larger one I mentioned earlier, and two smaller ones which I temporarily attached to a headband for the photos. I'll put real pin backs on them eventually so it doesn't look as messy.<br />

I recently got a hair cut I don't like much, but curling it makes me feel significantly better. (So does pretending I'm a black and white film actress, clearly.)<br />

It's super cold here now, which is pretty discouraging when it comes to going outside in skimpy dresses and skirts to take pictures of them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OxiWwa7Ov_s/VK4P2i4WRiI/AAAAAAAAFNs/-Vw_EyLcCo0/s1600/hello%2Bkitty%2Bhat%2B5b%2Be%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OxiWwa7Ov_s/VK4P2i4WRiI/AAAAAAAAFNs/-Vw_EyLcCo0/s1600/hello%2Bkitty%2Bhat%2B5b%2Be%2Bf.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6iUtmta9OME/VK4P_DieNsI/AAAAAAAAFOo/zjIK_emp5cM/s1600/black%2Bfur%2Bear%2Bhat%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6iUtmta9OME/VK4P_DieNsI/AAAAAAAAFOo/zjIK_emp5cM/s1600/black%2Bfur%2Bear%2Bhat%2B2.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The first hat is based on Hello Kitty (of course!) Because this fur is softer and silkier than the usual one I use for hats, I interlined it with some fleece before sewing in the lining. This means there is two layers of fleece and one layer of fur total, so it should be nice and warm. I originally made the ears with my usual pattern but they looked much too large with this shorter fur, so I had to shrink them down a bit. It was sort of a pain, but since this was a custom order I wanted to make sure it was what the customer wanted. (The hat is now available in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/217648819/faux-fur-hello-kitty-hathood-adult-size?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank">my shop</a> as well).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LEtdGR3rszA/VK4P2xS2cuI/AAAAAAAAFNw/5VWUXw6VpbM/s1600/hello%2Bkitty%2Bhat%2B6%2Bb%2Be%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LEtdGR3rszA/VK4P2xS2cuI/AAAAAAAAFNw/5VWUXw6VpbM/s1600/hello%2Bkitty%2Bhat%2B6%2Bb%2Be%2Bf.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I normally have pompoms at the ends of this hat to tie under your chin, but the customer wasn't a big fan and asked for an alternative. I went with a button tab instead, and I really like it! There's two buttons on one side, and one button hole on the other, to allow for some adjustment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PqubXeB7IIc/VK4P2EwylkI/AAAAAAAAFNg/ngWbLP9ZsA4/s1600/hello%2Bkitty%2Bhat%2B2%2Bb%2Be%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PqubXeB7IIc/VK4P2EwylkI/AAAAAAAAFNg/ngWbLP9ZsA4/s1600/hello%2Bkitty%2Bhat%2B2%2Bb%2Be%2Bf.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The bow is not stuffed; it just looks poofy since it's made of fleece. I think it's the perfect Hello Kitty bow.<br />

The tab is made of twill on one side and fleece on the other.<br />

<br />
The second hat is more like the ones I've made before. Not much to say here. It's lined in fleece and has the usual big ears and pompoms. This fur is very long and luxurious feeling.<br />

PS. I think this was the first time I had two Etsy orders at once, and even though I still get very little business, it was pretty sweet.Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-65629303529343842322014-12-21T11:00:00.000-05:002014-12-21T11:00:01.719-05:00Yes, this is another circle skirt.One of the stores I go to regularly has a large selection of this shiny spandex that I keep using. I've posted 5 projects with this fabric already, and can tell you there's at least one other I didn't get pictures of. (For the curious: <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2013/12/these-outfits-make-me-want-to-ask.html" target="_blank">these skirts</a>, <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/12/vertical-stripes-horizontal-stripes.html" target="_blank">this fitted dress</a>, and <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/05/remember-how-i-was-looking-for.html" target="_blank">these</a> two circle skirt <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/04/it-seems-like-im-on-bit-of-spandex-kick.html" target="_blank">dresses</a>.)<br />
<br />
Recently, they had this variant of it that has dots cut out. I know I make a ton of circle skirts, but I really wanted to make something I would definitely wear with this awesome fabric. I had some trouble deciding what color to line it with, and eventually went with this bright yellow/green. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k1jV2_gT8So/VJYonLGZ8VI/AAAAAAAAFEI/pwourwIOlnw/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k1jV2_gT8So/VJYonLGZ8VI/AAAAAAAAFEI/pwourwIOlnw/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B6.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WqzmWQ9GmDI/VJYomuaWFzI/AAAAAAAAFEA/CW0z_IpqKkY/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WqzmWQ9GmDI/VJYomuaWFzI/AAAAAAAAFEA/CW0z_IpqKkY/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B4.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5iDTjsK3hYg/VJYome8qYbI/AAAAAAAAFD8/oded7ZHQhR8/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5iDTjsK3hYg/VJYome8qYbI/AAAAAAAAFD8/oded7ZHQhR8/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B1.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I really like how this pattern of dotted lines gets distorted around the circle skirt. It shifts nicely when moving around. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aQPbyBXVAVI/VJYomaRLRdI/AAAAAAAAFD0/U60armT3Fs4/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aQPbyBXVAVI/VJYomaRLRdI/AAAAAAAAFD0/U60armT3Fs4/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B2.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't line the waistband, just doubled the fabric. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wCYvKioy1ko/VJYom4p39bI/AAAAAAAAFEE/2hNx9Hy1NeE/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wCYvKioy1ko/VJYom4p39bI/AAAAAAAAFEE/2hNx9Hy1NeE/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B5.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WEhR5VtZJZQ/VJYomWC9d7I/AAAAAAAAFD4/H1qJVJdQn6Q/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WEhR5VtZJZQ/VJYomWC9d7I/AAAAAAAAFD4/H1qJVJdQn6Q/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B3.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The outer layer doesn't have a hem finish at all, but the green is a regular woven lining so I had to finish it somehow. I ended up just serging it with black and hot pink. (Speaking of pink, I also made these <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/08/how-are-my-calves-too-big-for-everything.html" target="_blank">leggings</a> a while ago.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k1jV2_gT8So/VJYonLGZ8VI/AAAAAAAAFEI/pwourwIOlnw/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k1jV2_gT8So/VJYonLGZ8VI/AAAAAAAAFEI/pwourwIOlnw/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B6.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VR5mQX8VHdo/VJYonXHlDpI/AAAAAAAAFEM/fVl0EiLuI6s/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VR5mQX8VHdo/VJYonXHlDpI/AAAAAAAAFEM/fVl0EiLuI6s/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B7.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Since the lining doesn't stretch, I cut it slightly big in the waist and stretched the waistband while sewing it on. Once the waistband was done, it gathered the lining to the correct size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dFszc8bgjZ0/VJYonolnGuI/AAAAAAAAFEQ/jNZAez39uOw/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dFszc8bgjZ0/VJYonolnGuI/AAAAAAAAFEQ/jNZAez39uOw/s1600/cut%2Bdot%2Bleather%2Blook%2Bskirt%2B8.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There you go, another circle skirt done! I'm sure I'll have even more of these in the future.Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-54102845342695105072014-12-20T20:49:00.000-05:002014-12-20T20:49:30.087-05:00How many times have I said I'm not making another hat?Every time I make a new type of hat I tell myself, "never again." I've even started telling my friends to stop me. It's always a crazy fiddly mess.<br />
<br />
No matter how many times I say it, I inevitably make another hat. Half way through this one my serger just quit. It was also my first time working with PUL fabric. Great!<br />
<br />
One of my friends asked for a warm, waterproof winter hat and sent me a bunch of pictures of helmets (the armor type) and some knit hats. From that we came up with an actually technically possible design for a sewn knight helmet hat with a movable visor.<br />
<br />
(I asked Bria to help model again since she was available)<br />

<br />
<a name='more'></a>For the pattern, I had a regular 4 piece fleece hat pattern, traced a band from an existing hat, and free-handed the top piece and visor. All the black fabric is PUL, and the red is a plain fleece. There's another layer of fleece sandwiched between the lining and outside layer for added warmth. If I were to make this hat again, I would skip this interlining.<br />

The visor attaches with buttons so it can swivel up, or be buttoned out of the way in the opposite direction like so: <br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MpsIJCgkCT8/VJYiiAMFdJI/AAAAAAAAFDE/8YPlV3__Z70/s1600/knight%2Bhelmet%2Bhat%2B6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MpsIJCgkCT8/VJYiiAMFdJI/AAAAAAAAFDE/8YPlV3__Z70/s1600/knight%2Bhelmet%2Bhat%2B6.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I stuffed the top piece with polyfill. This made it super difficult to sew on. I definitely need to find a better way to put the hat together if I have to make it again. <br />

<br />
The whole thing came out looking pretty good, though a bit too tight for the intended recipient. I think part of this is the extra bulk from the interlining and the PUL not being as stretchy as fleece on it's own. (The rest is me not being able to measure probably). I hope it stretches out with wear. I combined that with some leftover black spandex from <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/04/it-seems-like-im-on-bit-of-spandex-kick.html" target="_blank">this project</a> to make a quick color-blocked dress. The whole thing is serged together, and I used my standard fitted knit dress pattern. (You can find the tutorial for it <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/09/guest-post-at-so-sew-easy.html" target="_blank">here</a>). <br />
<br />
You'll notice a strange collar in the photos as well. I saw some cool collars and other accessories made out of boning a couple weeks ago and wanted to give it a shot. More on that later.<br />
<br />
Back to the dress: To figure out the color-blocking, I traced my plain dress pattern and eyeballed a line where I wanted the center panel to be. It follows the curves of the side seams on the dress, but slightly exaggerated. I cut on the line and made a note to add seam allowance on the new edges.<br />

I used the black as binding on all the edges. It's not cut on the bias because the fabric is stretchy as it is.<br />

Here's a closer look at the collar:<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UuWjmxH6Nwg/VJHzW65Nk7I/AAAAAAAAFBY/QQpBegy3nKM/s1600/striped%2Bdress%2Band%2Bcollar%2B7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UuWjmxH6Nwg/VJHzW65Nk7I/AAAAAAAAFBY/QQpBegy3nKM/s1600/striped%2Bdress%2Band%2Bcollar%2B7.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The neckband is made of a wide knit elastic, and the rest is rigilene boning. I didn't originally plan on this being so loopy but the boning is stiffer than I expected. I sewed the boning pieces to the neckband, then played around with sewing them to each other until the collar was comfortable. It closes with the kind of hook and bar that is usually used on waistbands.<br />

I added the bow on the front because the point was too sharp. It hides some binding that covers the edges there.<br />

<br />
I like these kinds of skeletal looking accessories, and want to make some more, though the stiffness of the boning makes it a bit hard to work with. Covered boning would probably be easier to sew. Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-13243924511306553192014-12-05T10:00:00.000-05:002014-12-05T10:00:03.622-05:00I'm longer than I thought.This project was sort of a personal challenge. I've been making a lot of quick and easy spandex items on my serger this year, and wanted to see if I could make something more complex. A catsuit seemed like a good candidate, and I can use it for costumes, as long underwear, etc.<br />
<br />
I own a catsuit in plain black so I started by tracing it to make a pattern. I figured tracing would work because there's a lot of leeway in getting the fit right with a stretchy fabric. The basic suit is 8 pieces: two front, one back, collar, a crotch gusset cut in half for a zipper, and sleeves. You might notice my suit has a couple more pieces, but I'll get to that in a minute.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B7SQ7e5OQyg/VIEafMMzIfI/AAAAAAAAE8w/TbUcyRc5J9o/s1600/striped%2Bcatsuit%2B1%2Bb%2Br%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B7SQ7e5OQyg/VIEafMMzIfI/AAAAAAAAE8w/TbUcyRc5J9o/s1600/striped%2Bcatsuit%2B1%2Bb%2Br%2Bf.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
Since this was sort of a "trial run" of this pattern, I didn't want to spend a lot on fabric. This was the best I could find that didn't have an obnoxious print and was reasonably priced, even though the stripes made it a little more challenging to work with.<br />
<br />
[Some of the following pictures might be a bit nsfw.]<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
So, I cut out my pattern, serged everything together, and added two invisible zippers - one down the front and one in the crotch (yay going to the bathroom without getting fully undressed). I put it on aaaand... it was too short from crotch to shoulder. I didn't account for this fabric being less stretchy lengthwise than the one my original suit is made from.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gar5mydG0EU/VIEafjPJtAI/AAAAAAAAE84/AtlW4UrT7Uc/s1600/striped%2Bcatsuit%2B2%2Bb%2Br%2Bf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gar5mydG0EU/VIEafjPJtAI/AAAAAAAAE84/AtlW4UrT7Uc/s1600/striped%2Bcatsuit%2B2%2Bb%2Br%2Bf.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
The solution was to remove the zipper (pain in the butt since it's sewn into such a thin stretchy fabric), and add some fabric. I decided to place the stripe over the chest so it looked intentional.<br />

Here's the crotch gusset. This took some figuring out because I'd never sewn one before and all the tutorials I found didn't have a zipper running through it. It's not lined up perfectly, but no one really sees this part anyways so I didn't bother fixing it.<br />

One of the commenters there mentioned using a sparkly fabric under the chiffon for a different effect. I've done something similar with other clothes, and I had the same fabric in some other colors, so I figured I'd try it out! For the lining, I used the same holographic print fabric as in <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/09/i-guess-i-really-like-crop-tops.html" target="_blank">this top from earlier in the year. </a><br />

<br />
I finished the edges with a serged rolled hem and used an elastic waistband. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5pbxNIpsEHk/VIEDjHrww7I/AAAAAAAAE8E/daGDoXGsKo4/s1600/chiffon%2Bstar%2Btiered%2Bskirt%2B9%2Bb%2Br.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5pbxNIpsEHk/VIEDjHrww7I/AAAAAAAAE8E/daGDoXGsKo4/s1600/chiffon%2Bstar%2Btiered%2Bskirt%2B9%2Bb%2Br.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The skirt is three tiers sewn to each other, instead of separate ruffles like the last one. I used one width of fabric for the top, then two, then four for the last tier, so each layer is gathered to half it's size. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G2eSbyLxS_c/VIEDh-fmESI/AAAAAAAAE7o/kJ8W0L1vYZg/s1600/chiffon%2Bstar%2Btiered%2Bskirt%2B1%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G2eSbyLxS_c/VIEDh-fmESI/AAAAAAAAE7o/kJ8W0L1vYZg/s1600/chiffon%2Bstar%2Btiered%2Bskirt%2B1%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I still have one more color of this fabric left. So far I'm pretty happy with what I've done with it. Any ideas for one more project?<br />
<br />
PS. This is what happens when serging chiffon. It is a huge mess!<br />

This time I made high-waisted panties since those are more difficult to purchase (and by making them I can use whatever cute fabric patterns I want). I wanted to make them out of lace for that pin-up look, and tried to match the front panel fabrics to lace I already had around. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTqgC88WtsU/VGUbIpGdajI/AAAAAAAAEyY/hsKm_RLdYEw/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTqgC88WtsU/VGUbIpGdajI/AAAAAAAAEyY/hsKm_RLdYEw/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B6.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x4iyOw8eoSk/VGUbI2vbSeI/AAAAAAAAEx8/GQc-LxNPv7s/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x4iyOw8eoSk/VGUbI2vbSeI/AAAAAAAAEx8/GQc-LxNPv7s/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B7.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I was inspired by one of my friends who mentioned buying a cheap pair of plain high-waisted undies to use as a pattern for some pin-up styled ones. This seemed like a good idea, so I also bought a pair. I then remembered some posts on Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing about <a href="http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/2012/08/detour-into-panty-land.html" target="_blank">making high-waisted panties</a>, so I looked those up for reference. I like the pattern Gertie uses more than my sample panties, but it wasn't available when I made these.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>This is the pattern I got from tracing my sample panties:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q2cMsOMtgqQ/VGUbHYObeII/AAAAAAAAExg/Rxq2Mw0RDFs/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q2cMsOMtgqQ/VGUbHYObeII/AAAAAAAAExg/Rxq2Mw0RDFs/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
They didn't have a separate center back panel like the ones on Gertie's blog. I was indifferent to this feature so I tried the pattern as-is first. The result was the panties on the left in the photos below. The original panties were a thick spandex meant to compress you a bit, and in the thinner knit I used for my mock-ups I had some unflattering bagginess in the back. Taking in just the back seam wasn't working very well, so I moved on and tried the style with a back panel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-shbAvNFwx7s/VGUbHjdzi6I/AAAAAAAAExk/K21oIiXDKig/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-shbAvNFwx7s/VGUbHjdzi6I/AAAAAAAAExk/K21oIiXDKig/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kTolTxQxJJw/VGUbH4LWlkI/AAAAAAAAExw/odBdK_HdeOI/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kTolTxQxJJw/VGUbH4LWlkI/AAAAAAAAExw/odBdK_HdeOI/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the final pattern. I free-handed a line on the first version of the back, straightened the back seam, and took some width out on the sides of the back panel. You can see in the above photos how this made the panties more of an hourglass shape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bSfyTxoreeY/VGUbII4Lk5I/AAAAAAAAExs/DVVQv4t5WcU/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bSfyTxoreeY/VGUbII4Lk5I/AAAAAAAAExs/DVVQv4t5WcU/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's everything cut out. This front panel is a cotton knit. All the lace is stretch lace, which was a bit of a pain to sew - my machines kept chewing it up since it's so flimsy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6v-Dcov5sBY/VGUbIlVNDzI/AAAAAAAAEx4/5SpZ5EP3rFs/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6v-Dcov5sBY/VGUbIlVNDzI/AAAAAAAAEx4/5SpZ5EP3rFs/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B5.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used coordinating lingerie elastic on the legs and waist. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-orgJ-zJ7BIM/VGUbJJc628I/AAAAAAAAEyE/xgmwmUbh4Uo/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-orgJ-zJ7BIM/VGUbJJc628I/AAAAAAAAEyE/xgmwmUbh4Uo/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B8.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hyPVINPj-zg/VGUbJdlq4GI/AAAAAAAAEyI/W5t_85BMs1w/s1600/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hyPVINPj-zg/VGUbJdlq4GI/AAAAAAAAEyI/W5t_85BMs1w/s640/high%2Bwaisted%2Bpanties%2B9.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I constructed everything using my serger except for the edging elastic which I top-stitched with a zig-zag. This cupcake fabric is a woven cut on the bias as suggested in Gertie's post. The black/pink pair in the first photos has a spandex panel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I was going to add worn photos because it's pretty hard to tell what these look like without a person in them, but I can't seem to get myself to do it. So, unfortunately, no photos.Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-75934283126690979772014-11-13T10:00:00.000-05:002014-11-13T10:00:01.414-05:00Update: Galliano pirate jacket and vampire vestI posted about finishing the <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/02/i-probably-did-nothing-properly-but.html" target="_blank">Galliano Pirate Jacket</a> quite a while ago, and also about making <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/02/this-might-be-most-vampire-appropriate.html" target="_blank">this sweet vampire inspired vest</a>. The photos I had of them back then aren't the best, so I thought I would do a little update.<br />
<br />
Bria modeled the jacket for me so I could take a couple better photos.<br />

Overalls? Back in August, a Reddit user was giving away a couple vintage patterns and I snagged this baby:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fR9YsLmSByk/VGDwVzkm2oI/AAAAAAAAEt8/R2t3Ws9M6Po/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B23%2Br%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fR9YsLmSByk/VGDwVzkm2oI/AAAAAAAAEt8/R2t3Ws9M6Po/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B23%2Br%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
It's Le-Roy/Weldons number 9135, which is a brand I've never even heard of. I love the overall bib type top - it looks a lot like the backless dresses that were super popular this summer. I wanted a skirt that was a bit fancier, and had also recently acquired this Japanese sewing book (Otome no Sewing). It includes a pattern for a super cute gathered skirt with a yoke. <br />

<br />
I then found this great flannel at the $1.99 fabric store. Put all that together, throw in some lace, and here's the result!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7JQoh087Zik/VGDwUkc474I/AAAAAAAAEvE/T-NxAicvv2o/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B19%2Bfb%2Bb%2Br.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7JQoh087Zik/VGDwUkc474I/AAAAAAAAEvE/T-NxAicvv2o/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B19%2Bfb%2Bb%2Br.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eLcfFVtoIy8/VGDwUOhcu8I/AAAAAAAAEtU/nqnl4PVmak8/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B18%2Bb%2Br.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eLcfFVtoIy8/VGDwUOhcu8I/AAAAAAAAEtU/nqnl4PVmak8/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B18%2Bb%2Br.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I had to get someone to help me fit the back because trying to do it myself when there's so little fabric was quite difficult. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G_mv2kcsNCk/VGDwVPNl2mI/AAAAAAAAEuE/R_kjas4J6Is/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B20%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G_mv2kcsNCk/VGDwVPNl2mI/AAAAAAAAEuE/R_kjas4J6Is/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B20%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
It's not really visible in the photos, but the bust darts are a bit too pointy. I tried to re-shape them a couple times, and it's one of those things that will probably only bother me, but they could be better. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lfajPDC-9KI/VGDwUAVqNUI/AAAAAAAAEto/23Db4I2nd6k/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B17%2Bb%2Bfb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lfajPDC-9KI/VGDwUAVqNUI/AAAAAAAAEto/23Db4I2nd6k/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B17%2Bb%2Bfb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't want to have visible buttons on the skirt when wearing it on it's own, so I attached the top and bottom with skirt hooks and bars. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1gHaERuvbAc/VGDwW1waYWI/AAAAAAAAEus/eAGDphwnvjI/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B5%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1gHaERuvbAc/VGDwW1waYWI/AAAAAAAAEus/eAGDphwnvjI/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B5%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wCsz4O60cZI/VGDwWe-7zBI/AAAAAAAAEuY/vXAqTKXYN1w/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B4%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wCsz4O60cZI/VGDwWe-7zBI/AAAAAAAAEuY/vXAqTKXYN1w/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B4%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There's also hooks in the back with decorative buttons. I figured this would be easier to do up on my own than real buttons. You can also see how the lace is attached here. I sandwiched it between the outer fabric and lining, then top-stitched everything. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JuUWdYJZeGs/VGDwXf8kBoI/AAAAAAAAEvQ/PtGXmQv_RA0/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B6%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JuUWdYJZeGs/VGDwXf8kBoI/AAAAAAAAEvQ/PtGXmQv_RA0/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B6%2Bb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the skirt on it's own. The yoke is not quite symmetrical because...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d4WmQhCxQcE/VGDwU7CoPyI/AAAAAAAAEt0/eUECtdViDYE/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B2%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d4WmQhCxQcE/VGDwU7CoPyI/AAAAAAAAEt0/eUECtdViDYE/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B2%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
ahhhhh! I ripped a hole in the fabric taking the basting stitches out of the zipper. I had to re-insert the zipper with a wider seam allowance to hide the hole (thankfully the skirt was still a bit roomy so losing the width on the waist wasn't a problem.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VVk9C7CkVgk/VGDwVh3kkeI/AAAAAAAAEuc/ytMQtmvRDFU/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B22%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VVk9C7CkVgk/VGDwVh3kkeI/AAAAAAAAEuc/ytMQtmvRDFU/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B22%2Bb.JPG" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the final zipper:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DYX-IKN3gkE/VGDwWRgcj1I/AAAAAAAAEuo/57d4qU32hos/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B3%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DYX-IKN3gkE/VGDwWRgcj1I/AAAAAAAAEuo/57d4qU32hos/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B3%2Bb.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
It's not symmetrical with the other side because of the fix. I tried to line the pattern up on the fabric as well, but the flannel is pretty loosely woven and shifty. I'm not too bothered by it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Only the yoke of the skirt is lined. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_Oj1qLHcpyY/VGDwXc8QScI/AAAAAAAAEu0/EI2L3R2rlVw/s1600/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B7%2Bb%2Br.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_Oj1qLHcpyY/VGDwXc8QScI/AAAAAAAAEu0/EI2L3R2rlVw/s640/plaid%2Bsalopette%2B7%2Bb%2Br.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you've read my other posts you might be aware of my love/hate relationship with bows. Well, guess what? I made four bows this time, before I even finished the rest of the dress! They're all on pin backs so I can put them wherever.<br />
<br />

I've already worn the skirt a couple times. This is definitely not one of those projects that will sit around in the back of the closet.<br />

<br />
I took a while to figure out the easiest way to hem the chiffon. Eventually I settled on a serged rolled hem with wooly nylon thread. Wooly nylon thread is not twisted, so it spreads out and fills in some of the space between stitches. I hadn't done this before, but thought it would make a nice little border (and it's fast!) Once I decided on this, the skirt seemed less intimidating.<br />
<br />
I didn't have a pattern (this type of skirt really doesn't need one since it's all rectangles) though I based the measurements on another skirt I own. They ended up as follows:<br />
<br />
waistband 38" (with elastic 28")<br />
first ruffle 54" (one width of the fabric)<br />
second ruffle 108" (2 widths)<br />
third ruffle 216" (4 widths)<br />
<br />
each ruffle is 7" long and the overlap between them is about 2".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I9d2JWbgYes/VF7kdmg7PRI/AAAAAAAAEsw/GqRPyPYNq8c/s1600/star%2Bchiffon%2Bskirt%2B3%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I9d2JWbgYes/VF7kdmg7PRI/AAAAAAAAEsw/GqRPyPYNq8c/s1600/star%2Bchiffon%2Bskirt%2B3%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>

<br />
I used a white base fabric for the ruffles. Since the chiffon is sheer, it creates light and dark stripes, which I really like.<br />

<br />
These pictures show how the ruffles are constructed. Each layer is gathered together with a white strip, and the next layer is sewn to the bottom of the white strip, leaving the chiffon free at the bottom. <br />

<br />
Here's a close up of that rolled edge. I followed the directions in my serger manual and it worked pretty much exactly how I wanted. I sewed the vertical seams in each layer first so I could hem longer strips continuously. I haven't washed this skirt yet, so I hope the chiffon doesn't pull away from the stitching when that happens. (I've had other rolled hems pull apart in the wash).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m5K958W3IvA/VF7kdQhAW4I/AAAAAAAAEsM/tIFI-tB8QL0/s1600/star%2Bchiffon%2Bskirt%2B16%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m5K958W3IvA/VF7kdQhAW4I/AAAAAAAAEsM/tIFI-tB8QL0/s1600/star%2Bchiffon%2Bskirt%2B16%2Bb.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
One problem I had with the skirt is that the top ruffle is too small. You can see what I mean in the photo above. When I spin around in the skirt the top layer kind of binds the ones below it in an unflattering way because it's not wide enough. This isn't a problem with the original skirt I used as a guide, so I was surprised when it happened. I assume it is because there is not enough difference between the waist and this ruffle, but I'm not completely sure. (Every layer is 2X the one above it, but this ruffle is not 2X the waist).<br />

Action shot! This skirt is really swishy and fun to wear.Gosia Malkowskahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128392259496859851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2982970130929420492.post-6114685709716768882014-11-08T14:30:00.001-05:002014-11-08T14:30:36.903-05:00There's some cool stuff at "clothes by the pound"If you have a "clothes by the pound" store near you and want to practice sewing, go there! In about twenty minutes, I found these two great pieces that were in pretty rough shape, but didn't have any stains or holes in the body of the fabric (this is important - things with popped seams, ragged hems, ripped sleeves are all good candidates for fixing, things with big mystery stains and holes in the center of a panel are not). With a couple hours of work, I have some awesome new dresses that I would have struggled to put together from scratch. I wouldn't normally post about "fixing" clothes, but I also thought these dresses were really awesome designs.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I couldn't try this on or even figure out how the ties went with the zipper looking like this. For the price, I said "what the hell" and took the chance that it might not fit me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Put in a new zipper, trimmed the mesh neatly, and that was it! I couldn't find any other damage to the dress, though it just barely fits. The back isn't lined up perfectly due to how the fabric was torn out (I had very little to work with around the zipper) and I didn't want to chance ripping it out and re-inserting because the fabric is a loose weave. </div>

<br />
I really like the shape of the back on this. I have narrow shoulders, so this narrow back lays very well on me. I might have to try copying it.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lpw1BEW9xVA/VF5iGkn1lkI/AAAAAAAAEqk/-2nXCEMe_M4/s1600/purple%2Bcheck%2Bdress%2Bfix%2B4%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lpw1BEW9xVA/VF5iGkn1lkI/AAAAAAAAEqk/-2nXCEMe_M4/s1600/purple%2Bcheck%2Bdress%2Bfix%2B4%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>

<br />
The second dress seems to be vintage. I think it's made of velveteen (It has a lower pile and isn't as bristly as velvet) with machine embroidery. The collar caught my eye since it's not a common style anymore. I don't have a before picture (I know, useless) but when I got it, it was chopped off at the bottom. It was a clean cut and even, going through the zipper, but luckily the zipper pull was still there. The dress was a slight A-line with side bust darts. It was a little big on me.<br />
<br />
I started by sewing a tack at the end of the zipper so I wouldn't rip the slider off. I found some matching bias tape and added that to the bottom to finish the cut edge. It's not the exact same color as on the sleeves and collar, but it's pretty close. Please excuse the non-matching thread - I wasn't too particular about fixing this neatly since it was so cheap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NnF_M_T6CWA/VF5iF53s1uI/AAAAAAAAEqQ/lR20lStHKX8/s1600/green%2Bvintage%2Bmini%2Bdress%2B8%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NnF_M_T6CWA/VF5iF53s1uI/AAAAAAAAEqQ/lR20lStHKX8/s1600/green%2Bvintage%2Bmini%2Bdress%2B8%2Bb.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Since it was a little too big, I added darts in the front and back. <br />

(Of course I'm standing in a way that bunches up the back in my only back photo.)<br />

You can clearly see the darts here. They really shape the front well.<br />

<br />
After making <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/10/whats-good-way-to-get-some-tentacles_25.html" target="_blank">tentacles for my friend Bria</a>, she said I could have the leftover pink/peach minky fabric. I thought it would make a cute and comfy top that I could put together super quickly using a simple kimono sleeve top pattern (the one I used for <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/06/tops-that-are-both-really-hard-and.html" target="_blank">these fishnet tops</a>). It's just two pieces - front and back. <br />
<br />
This is a story of what happens when I get too excited and lazy and don't think through what I'm doing.<br />
<br />
I cut out the top and sewed it together, as easily as expected. Put it on and...<br />
It's too tight. Dammit. I had enlarged the pattern some since this fabric is less stretchy than the fishnet, but apparently not enough. I serged the seams so there's absolutely no seam allowance to let out. It actually looks great in photos, but it's not comfortable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zs3GaaJquVM/VFw2Y64dR3I/AAAAAAAAEnQ/jO_IXCRh1hc/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B7%2Btight%2Bb%2Be.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zs3GaaJquVM/VFw2Y64dR3I/AAAAAAAAEnQ/jO_IXCRh1hc/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B7%2Btight%2Bb%2Be.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Ok. Try again. The second time, the neck came out too wide because I foolishly added width at the center front and back (on the fold when cutting) without making the neck opening smaller. There's technically nothing wrong with this version, I just didn't want such a wide neck. Bria didn't mind so I passed it on to her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ysWWMwv6V3c/VFw2XcisfJI/AAAAAAAAEm8/EjD3ApO54mY/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B3%2Bboatneck%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ysWWMwv6V3c/VFw2XcisfJI/AAAAAAAAEm8/EjD3ApO54mY/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B3%2Bboatneck%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D65EDQgavuk/VFw2XmdHWCI/AAAAAAAAEnE/8uvE-gy77mw/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B4%2Bboatneck%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D65EDQgavuk/VFw2XmdHWCI/AAAAAAAAEnE/8uvE-gy77mw/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B4%2Bboatneck%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Third try, finally what I wanted... now that I've used up all the fabric.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PfXEgxaeLos/VFw2XKjXeCI/AAAAAAAAEnA/y9_RYxveEGg/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B14%2Bfb%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PfXEgxaeLos/VFw2XKjXeCI/AAAAAAAAEnA/y9_RYxveEGg/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B14%2Bfb%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ndT5-oZfZ0o/VFw2PYYaZ5I/AAAAAAAAEms/yOimn1ENSxY/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B13%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ndT5-oZfZ0o/VFw2PYYaZ5I/AAAAAAAAEms/yOimn1ENSxY/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B13%2Bb.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(If you like this skirt, I talk about it in <a href="http://as-i-sew.blogspot.com/2014/01/i-wanted-to-make-dress-other-day.html" target="_blank">a previous post</a>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a comparison shot of the too-tight top and the one that fits correctly:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GKUfeSawcVA/VFw2OiqnpgI/AAAAAAAAEmc/XSnQA_nIpBc/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B11%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GKUfeSawcVA/VFw2OiqnpgI/AAAAAAAAEmc/XSnQA_nIpBc/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B11%2Bb.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see, the problem was mostly in the chest area. I serged the hems as well as all the seams. The tops went together very quickly this way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_Mf2GM9Icrk/VFw2YjhBaYI/AAAAAAAAEnI/dIr79rPQ5lg/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B6%2Btight%2Bb%2Be.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_Mf2GM9Icrk/VFw2YjhBaYI/AAAAAAAAEnI/dIr79rPQ5lg/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B6%2Btight%2Bb%2Be.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KRpZwUN3oHU/VFw2OsDVIeI/AAAAAAAAEmk/MlyZJlXS4W4/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B1%2Bboatneck%2Bb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KRpZwUN3oHU/VFw2OsDVIeI/AAAAAAAAEmk/MlyZJlXS4W4/s1600/minky%2Btop%2B1%2Bboatneck%2Bb.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I plan to wear this with high-waisted skirts, hence the short length. (I'm showing it with something lower-waisted so it's easier to see where the hem hits.)</div>
